GLOWING HAND BLOB

A project for 24672 DIY Design and Fabrication

DSC_0077.JPG

For this project, we were tasked to make a light using:

Only cardboard, chipboard, foamcore, or paper

No adhesives (glue, tape)

A light source (lights, string lights, leds, bulbs)

How i got there

For this project, I knew I wanted an amorphous, blob-like figure. The photos above show some of my inspirations. I took inspiration for the blob-texture from both lights and things in real life.

Technical PART

When I approached the build of this project, I first started thinking of utilizing living hinges. However, I later decided that i would use no technology other than hand tools and my hands to create this project. So, in order to do that, I went back to my roots! As a child I made a lot of crafts out of candy wrappers: pot holders, boats, cranes, chains, etc.

So I settled on using plain white paper to make chains that I would then weave together.

The original candy wrapper chain was proving to be too weak, and I wasn't happy with how simple it looked. So, I doubled them up and interwove it to be a sort of helix chain.
